The Healing Rhythm: How Breath Influences Our Inner State

The Healing Rhythm: How Breath Influences Our Inner State

Posted by Nicola Flanagan on

We breathe more than 20,000 times a day without even thinking about it. ✨

Breathing is probably the most important and most essential function in our body.

Breathing is more than just a natural act; it reflects our inner landscape and is intricately linked to our nervous system. Each breath serves as a window into our emotional state and mental clarity. When we’re feeling calm and balanced, our breath tends to be slow and steady. But in moments of stress, our breathing becomes rapid and shallow, signaling the activation of the sympathetic nervous system—our body’s fight-or-flight response to perceived danger.

What’s often overlooked is that we have the power to shift this dynamic. By consciously controlling our breath, we can influence how we feel. Slower, deeper breathing taps into the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of our body responsible for rest and relaxation. This shift tells our brain that we’re safe, allowing our muscles to relax, our heart rate to slow, and our mind to find clarity.

A simple yet highly effective breathing technique to achieve this state of calm is called Box Breathing. Here’s how it works:

  1. Inhale through your nose for four seconds.
  2. Hold your breath for four seconds.
  3. Exhale slowly through your mouth for four seconds.
  4. Pause for four seconds before taking the next breath.

This controlled breathing exercise helps balance your body’s response to stress and creates a sense of stillness. When practiced regularly, Box Breathing can enhance your resilience, improve focus, and even reduce anxiety.

In every breath, we have an opportunity to reset, release what no longer serves us, and reconnect with our sense of inner peace. Breathing consciously transforms a simple, automatic process into a powerful tool for well-being. The more we engage with our breath, the more in tune we become with our inner world, creating space for renewal and balance.

So let’s embrace the gift of breath. It's a lifeline to our health, our emotions, and our journey back to ourselves. On this #WorldMentalHealthDay, take a moment to focus on your breath and reflect on how small, mindful actions can bring lasting calm and balance into your life.
